Cloud Optimised Networking

One of the hottest and most talked about concepts in technology today, Cloud Computing, AKA The Cloud, has wasted little time in defying its fluffy name. Indeed it is already rapidly transforming and redefining the way businesses everywhere consume, manage, and even think about their IT infrastructures.

The early market may remain rife with hype and confusion, but with the promise of mouth-watering cost efficiencies, faster innovation and time-to-market; and on-demand, flexible application scalability, there’s no doubting the model’s enormous underlying potential. The Cloud can deliver all the benefits of utility computing to even the smallest operation, allowing firms to ratchet IT resources up and down exactly in line with their business need. It allows businesses to take advantage of key technologies like storage and desktop virtualisation on a low-cost, almost risk-free basis. It also eradicates the “upgrade treadmill”, cuts capital expenditure, and it offers the substantial financial comforts of an Opex payment model. The list goes on.

All this makes Cloud Computing one of the key strategic issues for the majority of businesses today. But for a cloud strategy to deliver fully on its potential, there’s little room for structureless, blue-sky thinking. Deploying the right tactics and supporting technologies will be crucial as the reality of the cloud kicks in.

The vast majority of cloud services rely on Internet connectivity for example. This makes them incredibly flexible, accessible, available, and cost-effective. Without the support of the right infrastructure however, it also makes them hugely vulnerable. As such, the performance of any cloud-hosted application can only ever be as good as the performance of the web connection via which it is accessed, which in turn is subject to the vagaries of shifting network resources, thousands of end-points and the millions of synapses connecting them all.

In other words, question marks over web, networking, and bandwidth performance, reliability, and scalability just aren’t an option for those looking to exploit all the Cloud has to offer. Luckily though, properly managed, this too can be turned to the advantage of the business via the deployment of the right networking hardware.

High-availability pooled failover blades, high-end switching and wireless routing, and virtual firewalls and load balancers instead of dedicated devices. This helps cut device count and sprawl dramatically as well as providing a highly redundant, resilient environment.

These reductions help further by reducing capital spend, power consumption, maintenance, human resource requirements, software licenses, and other costs. What then, are the key product groups that organisations ought to be thinking about? What spec do they need to be and why? And how should management go about future proofing it all?

There are many considerations. Layer 3/4 switching that connects directly to your cloud provider; proper Firewall resource (essential given the intrinsically open nature of Cloud provisioning); wireless ‘N’ switches and access points (for wall-to-wall, fast access); business-class wireless routers, Power over Ethernet (PoE) for applications such as VoIP and Collaboration, and Unified Comms solutions like telepresence. All these and more are essential ingredients in the Cloud-friendly infrastructure. Most crucial of all however, is the best advice.

Without it your cloud strategy is unlikely to get that silver lining after all.
