The Useful Properties of Acrylic

Acrylic is a very versatile material and is used in many products today. Acrylic is a very good material, it is much lighter than glass, much more resilient and stronger than glass, it can also be shaped easily and scratches can be removed with ease. Acrylic may be a little more expensive to buy than glass but many people prefer it due to its unique and versatile qualities. 

Acrylic has a wide range of uses and is used in many things. Acrylic is often used in medicine. It is used in bone operations to fix and hold bones in place, it is used to make dentures and even contact lenses. During the war acrylic was found to be very useful in the body. Pilots who had glass or acrylic splinters in their eyes from crashes were found to suffer more depending on whether or not it was acrylic. The pilots who had glass in their eyes from the planes were more likely to get an infection and the body would reject it almost straight away. With the pilots who had acrylic in their eyes the infection rate was much lower and body didn’t reject the material. Therefore acrylic is now used in contact lenses. 

Acrylic is used to make acrylic domes. These are great for use in business and even on stage. The domes are large and used to display information, they are modern and very pleasing to look at. On stage acrylic is used to again display something, either pictures or to show lights. However acrylic is used for entertainment purposes it always looks great and like nothing else. Acrylic was even used to make the first complete acrylic staircase, this was a great achievement and looks fantastic. 

There are some negatives to acrylic, acrylic is known to scratch easier than glass. However with acrylic the scratches can be easily removed. With glass this cannot be done. Acrylic will burn and melt if placed in a direct flame.
