Which camera is best for telescope and which should I buy? DSLR or CCD?
I like to know, which one including brand and model number would be best for taking astrophoto to show m45 and seven stars as a very sharp with X sign each. I’m thinking about getting Orion Astrograph 8 inch f/4 ratio newtonian reflector. Is that a good scope too?
The Orion 8″ Astrograph is an excellent scope.
Orion are a leading company with a very good reputation for building high quality telescopes.
Any camera with a B or T setting and a locking cable release will do the job.
An old Practica is as good as a £1000 super bells and whistles camera.
It’s nice to have a mirror lock to avoid vibration but a simple solution is hold a dark cover over the telescope aperture without touching the telescope, or over the lens, open the shutter and remove the cover.
Thousands of high quality astrophotographs were taken before auto exposure cameras were invented, long before digital cameras were invented and even before 35mm cameras were invented.
The telescope provides the images, the camera is a film holder with a shutter, nothing more. You cannot use the camera’s meter for star shots, but lunar and some planetary photos have sufficient brightness for the meter to become usable.
For M45 you will need a very low power on that scope to get it all in and you can do just as well with a camera and long lens.
Some of the best star cluster and large gaseous nebulae pictures are taken with camera lenses of 200mm or 300mm, keeping the shutter open for several seconds to several minutes and in extreme cases for very faint nebulae and the darker lanes in the Milky Way, for an hour or more.
These are done with a Pentax 6×7 and mostly with a 300mm lens. A 35mm with a 300mm lens has the same image scale but a smaller field of view. An 80mm lens on 35mm would give around the same field width.

What I call the ‘Ghosts and Angels Nebula’, easily done with a 35mm film camera or a digital camera and a 300mm lens and a half hour exposure on 100ASA film.

Separate exposures through red green and blue filters on black and white film and using them to print onto colour print or slide film can give impressive results, more versatile than using colour film.
The camera can be mounted piggy-back on the telescope or on a separate mount. Camera mounts with motors for star guiding are readily available and are not dificult to make.
I made my first astro camera as a metalwork project in school when I was 13. I still use it 50 years later.
To get an X across the stars you use a star-cross filter available from any photo store, or overexpose using a very thick covering over the diagonal mounting spider bars or use thick crossed bars across the mouth of the telescope, fixed to a frame so you can slide it on and off. Turning it through the exposure allows you to double or triple the number of spikes. or as many times as you turn it, but each will be less strong than if the bars were unmoved through the whole exposure.
The crosses are simply diffraction spikes and so you can as many as you want by simply laying more bars across the telescope aperture.
Some telescopes have curved spider arms to avoid getting diffraction spikes.
Large blobs for the brighter stars are obtained by simply defocussing for part of the exposure and can look quite impressive, showing the star’s colour better than a point image.

For planets, webcams are the choice these days, plus a free program called Registax which you can download, and you can sort out the best of twenty to a hundred exposures, stack them to reduce the signal to noise ratrio, and get results from a ten or twelve inch telescope better than profressional observatories used to get with 1-metre telescopes and larger.

CCD cameras with good resolution and features are very expensive.
A 35mm camera and a scanner or a digital camera, either with it’s own lens or used for focal plane or eyepiece projection techniques on the telescope can give you very good results much more cheaply, and you can use Registax with them to improve the results.
T-mount adapters to fit the camera to a telescope cost around £20 upwards or you can make an adapter or a camera holder quite easily.
Moonfish does some good products at decent prices. I have had 2″ barrel eyepieces and Barlow lenses, camera adapters, and an ecellent 2″ diagonal from them over the last couple of years and always had fast and excellent service. I don’t work for them, just use them.
2″ eyepieces allow a wider feld than 1 1/4″ eyepieces because they cover more of the prime image.
