Does it matter if you have a fire alarm annunciator other than a control panel?

I would like to know whether to buy an annunciator or control panel for my fire alarm.

I am going to assume this is a commercial building. There are several ways to look at this, but I would start with the type of building (meaning its use), as the National Life safety Code (NFPA 101) classifies buildings into categories, and also indicates which categories require life safety systems. The National Fire Code (NFPA 72) establishes how these various systems have to work. And then you have your own local and state code requirements, which often take precedence over any other requirements. For instance, in some jurisdictions, commercial buildings may have a combined intrusion/fire alarm systems: in other jurisdictions, the fire alarm must be a standalone system. So, the best approach in answering your question is to call your local fire department (or the fire marshal’s office) and talk it through with them. They’ll generally want a description of the building (floors, square footage, etc.) and the usage, how many tenants, etc.

The advantage of taking this approach is that you stay out of trouble. If you violate the code requirements (even through ignorance) and something happens, then you are liable. It’s not worth the risk.
